excel - Set conditional formatting to compare content to cells in different sheet -

looking way conditional formatting on 2 excel sheets. spreadsheet log of public patrons lastname, firstname, date, time, staffinitials, cpu number. need way compare lastly name of entries sec sheet containing names. highlight if match. ideas?

a simple countif() or match() function should take care of handily. let's want highlight lastly names in sheet1 column found in sheet2 column b.

first select sheet1's column a1 activecell. next take home ► conditional formatting ► new rule. when new formatting rule dialog opens, take use formula determine cells format alternative , supply =countif(sheet2!$b:$b, $a1) format values formula true: text box. click format , take reddish fill. click ok take formatting , ok 1 time again create new rule.

the lastly names in sheet1's column have matches in sheet2's column b highlighted in red.

alternate cf rule formula: =isnumber(match($a1, sheet2!$b:$b, 0))
